WRITING TASK 1 (20 minutes)

⏱️ Time: 20 minutes | Minimum: 150 words

📋 Instructions: The diagram below shows the process of water purification. Describe the process step by step, including how water enters the system and the stages it goes through before it is ready for use.

🔄 Water Purification Process

1 Raw Water Intake: Water is collected from underground sources (aquifer) or surface water sources (rivers/lakes)
2 Pre-filtration: Large particles, sediment, and debris are removed using screens and sand filters
3 Coagulation & Flocculation: Chemical coagulants are added to clump small particles together, forming larger aggregates that settle easily
4 Sedimentation: Water is left to settle in tanks, allowing heavy particles to sink to the bottom where they are removed
5 Filtration: Water passes through layers of sand, gravel, and activated charcoal filters to remove remaining particles and improve clarity
6 Disinfection: Chlorine or UV light is applied to kill bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms
7 pH Adjustment: Lime or other chemicals are added to adjust the pH level to the appropriate range for safe consumption
8 Storage & Distribution: Purified water is stored in large reservoirs and distributed through pipes to homes and businesses
